«"Your relative is in trouble"» – one of the most common fraudulent schemes. The scam is simple, but the decisive factor is the element of surprise and playing on the emotions of the potential victim. An 80-year-old woman fell into such a trap of scammers.

The incident was reported to the Chuguiv District Police Department on March 18. The victim said that the day before, an unknown woman called her, introduced herself as a police officer, and said that her daughter had hit a minor child with her car. In order not to hold the «culprit of the accident» accountable, the attacker said that she needed money. After the phone conversation, the elderly woman transferred 119 thousand hryvnias to the scammers’ account. Only later did she learn that her relative was fine, and that she had been scammed.

Having received such a call, first of all, do not panic and do not rush to fulfill the conditions of the scammers. Ask the person who introduced himself as a police officer to give the last name, first name, patronymic and date of birth of the detained relative. In almost one hundred percent of cases, criminals do not have such information. Also, specify in which police department your relative is located.

Try to call back as soon as possible to those who "need immediate assistance" or to people who can be nearby at that moment and confirm or deny what happened.
